Viva, Mt. Yatsugatake !!

Mt. Amida (阿弥陀岳) 2,805 m of Mt. Yatsugatake from Agricultural College

Mt. Yatsugatake is a range of dormant volcano mountains, with the highest peak of 2,899 m, located about the center of Honshu, the main island of Japan, or about 120 km air-line distance or 170 km highway distance west of downtown Tokyo. See Mountain Panorama for pictures and Flying over Mt. Yatsugatake for animation. "Yatsugatake" literally means "eight high peaks". But please don't ask which eight, because "eight" also means "many" in old Japanese.

The relatively flat land of the altitude between 700 m and 1,000 m is utilized as farming villages. The foothills of the altitude between 1,000 m and 1,500 m are generally covered with woods of birches, larches and pines, and the woods are partially developed as villa lots.

We don't have a villa but we have there since 1986 a cabin at the altitude of 1,400 m in the larch wood on the west side of the mountains in the district of Suwa. Because we live in a western suburb of Tokyo, we need to drive only 122 km on Chuo Expressway to get to the world quite different from Tokyo. Since both of us grew up in the countries, though 800 km apart, we love to stay in the mother nature in every other weekends in average through the whole year around.

Primarily because of the altitude, the temperature there is in averasge 7 degrees centigrade or 13 degrees fahrenheit lower than in Tokyo. We can enjoy a nice cool weather in the summer but must endure the chill in the winter, when the snow-clad landscape is very beautiful. An egg is frozen to break in the winter. Not only the water filtered through volcanic ash but also the air purified by the wood are very "delicious". Vegitables bought there stay good for long.

There happen something unbelievable in the common sense of Tokyo residents. For instance, the police is eagerly educating people to lock cars because many cars are left unlocked. In one late evening we got off from the train at an unmanned station together with several people. We drove our car parked in the space in front of the station into a dark mountain road with thick foliage covering the road but without any lights for 500 m or so. We were surprised to find there that a young lady who got off together with us were walking alone without a light. With the Tokyo common sense we offered her a ride but she refused. Maybe she must have thouhght that getting on our car was much more dangerous than walking alone in the dark.

In 1994, we climed up to the summits of highest peaks. It took 13.5 hours from the dawn to the dark evening. But since then the peaks look more familiar to us.

Some owners of villas grow lawns but we keep the ground as natural as possible. But Sue is very good at finding sprouts of wild flowers in the spring and cuts weed around to help the sprouts. This way we can enjoy almost 50 kinds of wild flowers within our lot, many of which can be seen only in the mountains. We see many kinds of birds and animals, including deer, fox and badger. For pictures of pretty flowers in this region, please refer to Flowers in the Golden Week and Mountain Flowers in a Hurry.

Mt. Yatsugatake had concentration of population in the pre-historical era 4 - 8 thousand years ago. In the excavation sites of such remains, we feel that the sites are where we want to live, not to mention the pre-historical people.

The west side of Mt. Yatsugatake, the district of Suwa, is known as the location of the Great Shrines of Suwa. The four Shrines are regarded and operated as a single entity. There are 10-20 thousand Suwa shrines all over Japan, which are all branch shrines of the Great Shrines of Suwa. In a Suwa Shrine, there are 2 sanctuaries side by side and the 4 corners of the holy ground are designated by 4 big poles. The god resides in the newer sanctuary. The old one is re-built so that the god can move to the new one. This rebuilding and replacement of the 4 poles, 16 poles in total for the 4 Shrines, take place once in every 6 years, in the thousands of years old "Holy pole festival". The 16 big fir trees are felled by holy axes in the mountains, pulled down-slope, tugged by local participants over a cliff and over a river all the way to the shrines to be erected. Whole the process is an eye-catching festival lasting for months.

In a clear day, the sky at Mt. Yatsugateke looks dark blue as the sky we see from a jet, unlike the whitish blue sky in Tokyo, for the sunlight is scattered much less in the sky because of fewer micro particles in the air. The dark sky is advantageous for watching stars. These days, Milky Way can never be seen in cities and many Japanese have never seen it. But we can see it at Mt. Yatsugatake whenever we have a good weather. Please see pictures of the Hale-Bopp Comet, for instance.

Spending weekends at Mt. Yatsugatake, we feel that all the evils we have got during the weekdays are washed away and that we are reborn. Thus we can live lives of difficulties without consuming ourselves. Viva Mt. Yatsugatake !!
