Stalls by local people had various crafts. We bought bracelets of tree seeds and a print of a turtle on Bayan tree bark. Tatoo, which Marquesas is famous for, was being demonstrated. Traditional food in the party was not good enough. A pig and banana were dug out of the oven in the ground, but pork without any added taste could not be tasty, and fresh banana was more delicious. There were songs by local old women, and dances by young men and women. Well, I would have regretted if I had not participated in the party, but it was not great enough.

But wonderful were Marquesas dances performed on the ship by students of "the School of Saint Joseph of Taihao", whose average age was said to be 18. I don't know what is "Taihao", because I can not find an island of this name. Seven boys and four girls came. Main performers of Tahitian dances are female, but interestingly, Marquesas dances performed by these students were apparently men-centric, with girls playing auxiliary roles. We were impressed by strength of men's dances and beauty of girls unexpected in this remote rural island. I found this performance one of the highlights of the cruise.

We were amused to hear that it was only the second formal performance for them and that this ship provided them with their first ever experience to get on an elevator.

昔部族の聖地だったMaraeが忘れ去られていたのを近年多目的用地として整備し、全Polynesia会議も開かれたという場所にテントを張って、RegentのPartyを開いた。地元の民芸品の展示即売も行われた。私はBanyanの樹皮に黒く亀をプリントした絵を買った。なお桟橋近くの展示場ではブレスレットを2つ買った。1つは収集中のキータグの代わり、1つはSueが使うという。

伝統的な料理はおいしくなかった。豚1頭とバナナ多数を焼石と共に埋めたのを取り出して配ったが、味の付いていないPorkはそんなにおいしいものではないし、バナナは生に限ると思ってしまった。その他椰子の果汁で炊いたらしい甘いご飯とか、得体の知れぬ料理が出た。おばさん達の歌は多分ご詠歌のようなものなのだろう。男女若者によるダンスは楽しめた。

夕方出航直前に船上でMarquesan Dancesの公演があった。The School of Saint Joseph of Taihaoの平均年齢18歳の生徒が、男7人女4人でPoolsideで踊った。Taihaoという島があるのかと思って探したが見つからなかった。同じPolynesian Danceでも、Tahitian Danceは女性が主役で男性はそれを盛り立てる役だが、ここで見たMarquesan Danceは面白いことに、男性の踊が主で、女性は補助的な役割だ。男性の力強さと女性の美しさに感動した。この離れ小島の田舎には似つかわしくない美女揃いだった。Papeete市が遠いからこそ美女が地元に残っているのかも知れない。航海の最後を飾る記憶に残るEventであった。

彼らはこれが2度目の公演だと聞き、またこの船で初めてエレベータなるものに乗ったと聞き、その田舎ぶりに感心し面白く思った。

Two lectures were on foot and leg care and on Hollywood. Neither was interesting to us. The evening entertainment was comedy. We don't want to look perplexed when everyone laughs.

Instead we read much. In addition, I put documents and souvenirs in order.

When we were dining with two other couples, that mysterious tall lady with good figure passed by us exchanging eye greetings with us. When I saw her first weeks ago, I believed she was a Japanese model married to an American millionaire. But she has an American name and doesn't read Japanese. Nevertheless I feel akin to her. She might be a third or fourth generation of Japanese or Korean immigrants.

だから一日中部屋に居て、読書と、書類とお土産の整理をし、沢山の書類を捨てた。

夕食ではいつものようにBlind Dateで他のご夫妻と出会って食事した。食事中に謎の女性が通り過ぎ、目で挨拶して行った。彼女を最初見かけた時には日本のモデルが米富豪に見初められて十数年と信じた。背が高くてカッコいいからEvening Dressがよく似合う。幾つ衣装を持ってきているのか何時も場面に相応しい衣装で登場し、2度と同じ衣装を見ることはない。建設業界の大物らしいご主人とLos Angeles郊外に住み、米国名を持ち、Sueが読んでいた雑誌を「これは日本語か」と珍しそうに見た。しかし外見はまったく日本人だ。聞きそびれているが、日本か韓国の三世か四世ではないかと思っている。

Sushi and Sashimi Bar was prepared on the poolside deck for lunch and we enjoyed soy sauce. Sue's opinion was that the taste of the rice and fish was right but that rice compression was not enough. Hotel Director came to our table and asked our opinions. I told him Sue said so and so. Sue was not happy about it.

In the afternoon, an Best Actor Oscar actor, Earnest Borgnine talked about his experiences in Hollywood. Everyone except me seemed to know him. He was 90 years old but he looked younger and active, and was good at talks. Then a movie "Marty", for which he was awarded Oscar, was shown. He was the main cast of this 1955 black and white film. He acted as a 34-year-old butcher with fat ugly figure, meeting a 29-year-old woman from University of New York.

It was a formal evening and Sue wore the green Kimono, which was praised by everyone we met. The evening show was the last performances of the singers and dancers of the ship. We were associated so long in the ship that some of them remembered us. We wish their continued success.

昼食時にはPoolsideで、寿司と刺身のバーが開催され、久しぶりのわさびと醤油の味を楽しんだ。Sueによれば、寿司飯とタネの味はよいが寿司飯のしめ方が足りないとの批評であった。Hotel Directorが態々我々の席に来て「寿司はこれでいいと思うか」と尋ねたので、Sueはこう言っていると伝えた。これが平穏志向のSueのお気に召さずしばし叱られた。

午後は、往年のOscar俳優Earnest Borgnineの経験談があった。私以外の全員がよく知っている有名人だった。もう90歳だというのにカクシャクとして話もうまかった。

彼の講演に続いて、彼がOscar男優賞を貰った1955年の白黒映画Martyが上映された。34歳で婚期を逸しているフトッチョでカッコ悪い肉屋のMartyが、29歳で婚期を逸しているNY大学出のモテない娘と出会い、周囲の反対をおして交際することにした、という筋書きだった。確かにはまり役で好演だった。

Formalの日で、Sueは緑の着物を着た。これが会う人ごとに褒められた。夜のショーは、船のSingers and Dancersの最後の公演だった。食事の場で付き合うこともあったので、出演者の一人一人の性格まで分かるようになり、何人かはこちらの顔も覚えてくれた。最後とは寂しいが前途の幸多かれと祈る。

The lecture by a captain on navigation was not new to me and not interesting. But interview of Barry Hopkins by Dionne was of a certain interest. A young hit singer Barry decided to become a cruise director, and started as one in a poor ship. His sense of entertaining people and his talent of speaking must have pushed him up. He showed also several portraits and a short movie he took and edited as his hobby.

In the afternoon, the equator crossing ceremony and a country fair was scheduled on the poolside deck, but they were postponed to tomorrow due to rough sway of the ship. Instead Captain Hayman was suddenly requested to do a lecture originally scheduled for tomorrow. His lecture was well prepared, but because of sudden change the audience was small. It was unfortunate for him.

In the afternoon, I spent time in making the summary photo album.

Captain Feldmanの航海術の講義は私にとって新しいものはなく面白くなかった。Barry Hopkinsの半生を語るInterviewは少し興味が持てた。もっともInterviewというより独りでしゃべっていた感があった。若い頃英国で歌手としてヒットを飛ばしたが、30歳を過ぎてCruise Directorになろうと決心し、ショボい船のCruise Directorになったとのこと。或る時見出されて大きな船に乗ることができた。彼の人を楽しませる術と話術が彼を押し上げてきたのであろう。

午後に予定されていた赤道祭とCountry Fairは、船の揺れが酷いので明日に延期され、代わりに明日の予定だったCaptain Haymanの講義が今日になった。話はよく準備されていて面白かったが、急なこととて聴講者は少なく、気の毒なことをした。夕食の大レストランも比較的空いていた。皆船室でRoom Serviceで食べたのかも知れない。

午後はPhoto Albumを整理して、Summary Albumを作った。

We didn't attend any social activities, because they didn't seem interesting to me, except that I attended Barry Hopkins' tribute to Frank Sinatra. He used to be a singer while young, and he still sing well.

In the dinner, we were together with a lady and a host. The lady, apparently a widow, introduced herself as an officer in a company in Las Vegas, and the host said he was an Australian government personnel usually sitting in front of the computer. He made use of the 4 weeks a year leave to work in the cruise for fun. I thought it was interesting, because it would be difficult to take 4 weeks leave in Japan, and because it would be difficult in Japan for government personnels to work for someone else.

The evening show was by the Hollywood pianist Pearl Kaufman again, and it was great again.

今日も船の行事には興味が持てなかったので参加しなかったが、夕方Barry HopkinsのTribute to Frank Sinatraという行事には参加した。彼はCruise Directorをやっているが昔若い頃はヒットを飛ばした歌手だったそうで、今でも歌はうまい。ただ技巧が先に立つ点が少し好きになれない。また会場にはDance Floorがあって、皆下手なDanceに繰り出すので、音楽鑑賞には向かなかった。参加して楽しむ行事だったが、生憎Sueは夕食前までに衣装を決めるのに忙しく、例えそうでなくてもDanceは拒否するだろうから残念だ。

夕食では、ご婦人と、彼女をescortするHostとご一緒した。ご婦人は一見して未亡人で、Las Vegasで会社の幹部をしていると自己紹介した。Hostが変わっていて、Australia政府機関の職員の現役で、日頃はComputerに向き合う仕事をしていると言ったが、年4週間の休暇を使って得意なDanceを活かして未亡人船客のお相手をするCruise Hostとして初めて参加したという。日本政府職員では、4週間も休みはとれないし、他で働くことは禁止されているはずだから、面白いと思った。

夜のショーは再びHollywoodのPianist Pearl Kaufmanの演奏だった。今回も素晴らしかった。
