We thought we should do this now, if at all, when we were not too young and too busy any more, and when we were not too old yet. But during the cruise, we noticed that we might have been too young.

     Among a couple of world cruise offers on the Web, we selected one run by a Florida-based cruise company "Radisson Seven Seas Cruises" for its itinerary, not too early and not too late and the ports of call, and a travel agent "Cruise Holidays of Federal Way" located in Washington State for its very quick email responses.

     The 30 thousand ton cruise ship "Seven Seas Navigator" already left Los Angeles on January 20, 2002 and was cruising around the South Pacific, but we skipped this segment. January 20 was felt too early for us, and Shig was afraid that 105 days on cruise might be too long for him. We embarked when the ship called Tokyo Harumi Pier on February 28, and disembarked at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on May 5. Then we flew back to complete the around-the-world trip, making sightseeing in Florida and Hawaii.
     Meanwhile we visited 16 countries and districts;

　日本には世界一周する客船が日本郵船「飛鳥」、関西汽船「にっぽん丸」、日本チャータークルーズ（三井商船）「Pacific Venus」と多分3社３隻あり、2002年は飛鳥が、2003年にはPacific Venusが出航する。しかし、日本の船もよいが日本社会を引きずって世界旅行したのでは刺激に欠ける。それに日本の船は欧米中心の旅となるが、私どもは欧米以外に興味がある。世界の船客の80%は米国人だそうで、米国の船会社は毎年幾隻か世界一周の船を出す。我々が目をつけた船会社"Radisson Seven Seas Cruises社"は、Ritz-Carlson Hotelなどで有名なCarlson Conglomerateの会社で、30千tのBahama船籍の"Seven Seas Navigator号"は、乗務員324名、旅客定員490名、客室252室である。当初はSuez運河から地中海に入り大西洋は素通りする計画だったが、9.11事件で急遽変更になり、きな臭さを避けてインド大陸の南端からインド洋を横切り喜望峰を回ってRio de Janeiroに行く。シメタ、おかげでCape TownやIguazu滝も見られる。

　最初の1/3周はサボったにも拘わらず左記16カ国・地域に立ち寄ることになり、Visaが必要な左記＊印については、米国にPassportを送るのも不安なので自分で取得した。実はこの他にMadagascarにも寄港の予定だったが、政情不安で航海中にキャンセルになった。

　航海中は備付けのPC10台でemailの送受は可能だった。しかし仕事用にB5判のDynabook SS-M Windows XPを購入した。船の構内交換機が何であっても部屋の送受話器からPCのModemに接続するアダプタも用意したのだが、これは無駄だった。衛星電話回線が高価なだけでなく不安定で実用にならなかった。世界地図のCDとGPSを買ったから航海中の位置が分かった。ついでに米国でのドライブに備えて市街地図のCDと12V --> 100Vの小型Car Inverterも買った。PCで演奏するWMA圧縮の20時間の音楽CDを3枚用意し、DVD Britannicaも持っていった。

　航海中約5日に1度はFormal DinnerでTuxedo着用とあったので、伊勢丹で既製服を買った。Tuxedoは夜の「準正装」で、正装はTailcoat 燕尾服なのだそうだ。知らなかったなあ。でも馬子にも衣装で結構紳士に見えた。一方スミヱは悩みつつもFormalは主に和服、洋服は副で考えて用意していったのだが、和服があまりにも好評だったので、正装の洋服はあまり使わなかった。

　重悳はじっとして居られない性質だからこのような一世一代のProjectを企画したのだが、この旅には二つの目的があった。

1. スミヱへの感謝の旅：結婚で自らは退職して以来、重悳の会社生活43年のうち奥さんとしては38年支えてくれた。特に重悳が都心に勤務した後半の25.5年は毎朝毎晩最寄駅まで送り迎えしてくれた。こんな奥さんはあまり居ない。
2. 重悳の座標軸確定の旅：重悳にとっては勤め先がないというのは初めての経験だ。日常を離れた環境で自分をジックリ見直し、今後人生をどう生きたいのか自問したいという考えがあった。

　2月28日に東京港晴海埠頭を発ち、5月5日にFloridaで下船した。FloridaとHawaiiで若干の時間を過ごし、5月12日に帰宅した。
