We first visited Safari Ostrich Farm. We saw ostriches of different ages in ranches, owner's "Feather Palaces" from outside, incubating machines, an ostrich race, etc. Sue rode on an ostrich for a photo. While we took lunch of ostrich meat, Shig went to the gift shop to buy some souvenirs. After the lunch Sue bought some hand bags, much cheaper than in Japan.

    We drove to Cango Caves for a guided tour. We found it a very dry stalactite cave with beautiful rock formations very well presented. Since we have seen many stalactite caves so far, nothing was new to us, though.

    Then we drove back to the Bay, doing 120km/h passing many cars to arrive at the pier at 4:40pm, while we were instructed to be back to the ship by 4:30pm for departure at 5pm. But fortunately a bus from another tour had just arrived almost at the same time. We all took the tender to return to the ship. The ship managed to leave the Bay around 5pm.

    As soon as the ship got out of the Bay, the swell resumed. But fortunately this was a "Casual" evening. We dined with a lecturer Dr. Martin (Marty) and Renee Glassner from Connecticut and Bernard & Nona Hamilton from Davis, California, who would disembark tomorrow at Cape Town. Both Shig and Sue took salmon.

　最初にSafari Ostrich Farmを訪れた。色々な年齢の駝鳥が飼われているのを見て、創業者が建てた"Feather Palaces"という邸宅を外から眺め、孵化器を見学し、駝鳥の競争を見た。スミヱは駝鳥にまたがって写真を撮った。駝鳥の肉などで昼食をとる間に重悳は売店でお土産を若干購入し、昼食後スミヱは日本よりずっと安くハンドバッグを買った。

　Congo Cavesに行ってガイドツアに参加した。見たことのある鍾乳洞では、水を見かけない最も乾燥した鍾乳洞だったが、鍾乳石は美しく、しかも照明と説明がよかった。我々は今までに色々な鍾乳洞を見てきたので、特に目新しくはなかったが。

　時間が迫ってきてBayに大急ぎで戻った。120km/hで多くの車を追い抜きながら、4:40pmに桟橋に着いた。5pmに出航するから船には4:30pmまでに戻るよう言われていたのだが、皆で遅れれば怖くない。幸いなことに別のツアのバスもほとんど同時に到着したところだった。全員が艀に乗って船に戻った。それでも船は5pm頃にはBayから出港した。

　船がBayを出るや否やまたうねりが来た。しかし今晩は幸いにも"Casual"の日だった。Connecticutから講師として招かれたDr. Martin & Renee Glassnerと、Davis, Californiaから来たが明日Cape Townで下船するというBernard & Nona Hamiltonと一緒に食事した。重悳もスミヱもSalmonを食べた。

    We left the ship to take a 3-day bus tour into the wine country. But we first climbed up to Table Mountain by the cable car, which was round-shaped and rotated while we ascended for better view for everybody. The top of the Mountain, 600 million years old, was surprisingly flat, although there were granite boulders here and there. As we had a wonderful weather, the view from the top was marvellous; the city, ports and Robben Island in the north, and a series of rock mountains in the south leading to Cape Point. In this south hemisphere, the city grew in the northern slope of Table Mountain. Robben Island was the prison island, like Alcatraz, where Mr. Mandela was imprisoned for decades.

    We descended and came back to the bus, which took us around the historic and modern streets of Cape Town. Then the bus took Route N1 to a town called Paarl. A dome-shaped rock at the top of a mountain was like a huge pearl, hence the town was named Paarl. We checked in a fine five-star resort hotel "Grande Roche" (Big Rock) in the midst of vineyards, which was South Africa's hotel of the year in 1995. We had late lunch there and were told to spend the rest of afternoon free. Shig and Sue were too energetic to rest still and climbed up to a hill in the backyard of the hotel for exercise. Then while Sue did launtry, Shig walked into the town and bought some souvenirs at a gift shop. In the dinner, we happened to be seated alone, and Sue enjoyed dinner without any social efforts. Shig took duck and Sue ate fish. Sue noticed that tables were served by many handsome male and female mulattos, of mixed white and black parentage, while more black persons worked in the back stage such as housekeeping and kitchen. Shig successfully took a picture of Southern Cross.

　下船してワイン地帯への3日間のバスツアに出た。但し最初は市内観光で、Table Mountainにケーブルカーで上った。最新式のケーブルカーは円く出来ていて、上るに従って回転し、乗客全員が景色を見られるようになっている。6億年前の地層という山頂は、あちこちに花崗岩の岩塊があるものの驚くほど平坦だった。典型的な隆起・浸食地形だ。幸運にも素晴らしい天気で見晴らしは最高だった。北側には市街地、港、Robben島が見え、南にはCape Pointに続く一連の岩山が見えた。この南半球ではTable Mountainの北側の山腹に町ができた。Robben島はAlcatraz島と同様な刑務所の島で、Mandela氏が何十年も服役していた所だ。Hyrexという名の珍しい猫ほどの動物を見かけた。動物学的に象と近いのだという。本当かいな。

　下山してバスに戻り、Cape Townの歴史的な、あるいは現代的な市街を見物した。それからバスは国道N1号線を通ってPaarlという町に行った。山の上のドーム型の花崗岩が巨大な真珠のようだからPaarlと名付けられたという。葡萄畑の真ん中にあるGrande Roche (Big Rock)という名の5つ星の素敵なリゾートホテルに入った。1995年度の南アフリカHotel of the Yearだという。 そこで遅い昼食をとったのだが、午後は自由にして下さいと言われてしまった。日曜日の午後田舎の真ん中でご自由にと言われても困る。二人ともエネルギーが余っていたので、運動を兼ねてホテルの裏にある山に登った。それからスミヱが洗濯をする間に重悳は町に出て、幸い開いていた1軒の土産物店で買い物をした。夕食は2人だけの食卓になり、スミヱは社交努力が不要な夕食もたまにはいいと喜んだ。重悳はカモを、スミヱは魚を食べた。スミヱが気付いたところでは、テーブルのサービスは白人と黒人の混血の多くの美男美女が担当し、もっと黒い人は部屋の掃除や料理など裏方を務めていた。重悳は南十字星の写真撮影に成功した。十字の長手方向を右に延長し、下のケンタウルス座α星とβ星の中央を垂直に右に伸ばして交わった所が空の南極だ。

    Neethlingshof Wine Estate was a big winery established in early 19th century. We experienced there a facility tour and wine tasting. Then we took a buffet lunch of South African food in another winery "Spier".

    Then we drove to "The wine capital" Franschhoek (French corner), established in 1688 by French immigrants called "die Hugenote" who were Calvin sect believers persecuted by the Catholic king Louis 14th. We walked around in a park commemorating die Hugenote. In this park, we saw several kinds of "Protea", the national flower of South Africa. The bus returned to the hotel and "high tea" was offerred, which we declined from. Instead we bought at the gift shop a colorful woven plate made of colorful telephone cable wires by a Zulu artist.

    Again we were seated alone in the dinner. Shig ate swordfish and Sue took a vigetarian dinner. After the dinner, Shig could take pictures of Southern Cross again.

　Neathlingshof Wine Estateは、19世紀初頭に創設された大きく美しいワイナリーだった。醸造所見学とワイン試飲をした。それから別のワイナリーSpier Wine Estateで、南アフリカ風料理のバイキング昼食をした。

　Wine Capitalを称するFranschhoekを訪れた。French Cornerというオランダ語だそうだ。Calvinの宗教改革によってProtestantになった人達2百数十名が、CatholicのLouis 14世の迫害に耐えかねて逃げてきてここに1688年に開いた町だ。彼らをdie Hugenoteと呼ぶ。彼らを記念する公園を歩いた。公園の一角に南アフリカの国花Proteaが各種あり、それらを見て写真に撮った。バスはホテルに戻り英国風の午後のお茶"High Tea"の時間と言われたがご辞退した。その時間にホテルの売店でZuluの某芸術家が色とりどりの電話ケーブルの電話線を使ってZuluに伝わる模様を編みこんだお皿を買った。

　今晩も2人だけの夕食だった。重悳はメカジキを、スミヱは野菜をとった。夕食後もう一度南十字星の写真を撮ることができた。

    We still had some time before departure of the ship, and we walked into Victoria Wharf shopping center near the pier for some shopping. When we thought we should return to the ship, we wanted the remaining South African money, Rand, back to US dollars, but we couldn't do it without the certificate to prove conversion into Rand. So we made haste to find an item in the shop to use the remaining Rand. We found the right item, very African cloth, priced R 215. But when Shig began to bring out money, he had only R 214. Fortunately, Dr. Martin Glassner, the lecturer on board, was besides us and gave us R 1. To our surprise, it was raining heavily outside. We ran back to the ship being drenched to the skin. In the ship Shig waited in a long line to get refund of Value Added Tax. The ship departed at 1pm on schedule.

    As the ship came out to the open sea, the swell resumed and we were careful about it. But as the ship came further from Cape Town, it subsided. There was a all passenger welcome party before dinner in the show lounge in the formal attires, and we talked with many people, especially with Dale & Pat. Sue wore black and gold Homon-gi kimono with golden Obi belt. This group shifted to the restaurant and thus we dined with Dale & Pat again, and Dr. Bill & Dorothy again. Both Shig and Sue took shrimp on noodles. We listened to Robyn-san's song and piano for half an hour, and entered the show lounge again to listen to a fabulous Polish violinist Dominique Ava from Scotland.

　船の出発までに若干時間があったので、埠頭に広がるVictoria Wharfショッピングセンタに入り、少々買い物をした。そろそろ船に戻る時間になり、南アフリカの通貨RandをUS$に戻して貰おうとしたら、Randに替えた証明書が無いとUS$には戻せないと言われた。仕方なく大急ぎで店で何かを買って残ったRandを使おうとした。いいものを見つけた。いかにもアフリカらしい布でR 215(US$20)だった。重悳があると思ってRandを取り出し始めてR 214しかないことに気付いた。幸い隣に講義のために乗船しているDr. Martin Glassnerが居られてR 1を拠出してくれた。驚いたことに外は驟雨だった。仕方なく船まで走って戻ったがズブ濡れとなった。それから重悳は船の中で長い列に並び、14%の消費税を無税にしてもらう返却手続きをした。14%は大きいから馬鹿にならない。船は1pmに予定通り出発した。

　船が広い海に出ると早速再びうねりに襲われたので、船酔いしないように注意した。しかしCape Townから遠くに離れるに従ってうねりは収まった。夕食前にショーラウンジでFormal衣装での全乗客のWelcome Partyがあった。Segmentの切れ目であるCape Townからの乗客を歓迎するのが趣旨だ。多くの人達と会ったが特にDale & Patと一緒だった。スミヱは黒と金の訪問着に金の帯をしめた。そのままレストランに移動し、Dale & Patと、Dr. Bill & Dorothyと一緒に食事した。重悳もスミヱもスパゲティの上に海老を置いたものを食べた。食後はRobynさんの歌とピアノを半時間ほど聴き、再びショーラウンジに入ってポーランド生まれでスコットランドから来たバイオリニストMs. Dominique Avaの素晴らしい演奏を聴いた。
