| In the lunch time, we dined with Maria. Shig saw Mr. & Mrs. Sculley was finishing lunch in another table, and went to him for a chat. He commented in his lecture that Japanese banks could not finance small businesses in Japan because of their mistakes in the past. Shig acknowledged it was true but added another reason over the lunch table. Shig believes that financial society in Japan has been for decades investing on mortgages but not on business models or prospects and that people have not been trained or accustomed to risk financing. That must be the other important reason for inability to invest in smaller businesses.
The ship cruised on and on and came near Hong Kong by the noon. We were impressed by many many high-rise apartment buildings on both sides of the channel, accommodating huge population in the outskirt of Hong Kong. The ship came alongside Hong Kong Ocean Terminal at 3pm, next to Star Ferry at the kowloon side. There came other Hong Kong based cruise ships of similar or larger sizes, and we wondered why there were so many cruise ships in Hong Kong. We learnt later that those were casino cruise ships. Chinese people in Hong Kong like Casino, but Hong Kong prohibits gambling. Therefore, the cruise ship take them out to open sea for gambling. Some casino cruise is only for one night, another goes to Shanghai and back in the weekend. We remember that casikno was allowed in Hong Kong before transfer to China in 1997, and later we have heard of cruise ships to take gamblers to Macao. Since Macao was also transferred to China in 1999, they must be gambling on the open sea. We disembarked and took a cab to Golden Building Computer shops to purchase another modem and a better phone cable, in hope to remedy inability to connect from the room to Internet. The PC shops were very active and prospering. Then we took the subway called MTR to Central, and took a cab again to get to Stanley, at the southern tip of Hong Kong Island. We bought cards with "Sue", "Shigenori" and "Jane", for a souvenir, in decorated characters. We walked through shops there and bought a jacket and blouses for Sue. They were found cheap. We came back to Central by bus, and wanted to eat something. We thought of a simple $5 dinner, but we failed to find such a restaurant near Central. So we went into Mandarin Hotel, wearing training shoes, and asked if they had a Chinese restaurant. The clerk answered "the 25th floor". So we went up and found a beautiful restaurant commanding a great view. But everyone was dressed up there and everything was very expensive there. One cup of soup costed US$16, but it was very delicious. We took fried noodles, fried rice, prawns and tea, which turned out to be a US$130 dinner. But everything was so delicious that I thought it was the best Chinese food I had ever taken in my life. We took Star Ferry to Kowloon in the upper class. In a shop near the ship, we bought two silk pyjamas and returned to the ship. |
昼食ではカナダの州都Victoriaから来たMariaと一緒になった。Sculley夫妻が別のテーブルで食事を終わろうとしているのを見つけた重悳は声をかけ、暫時話をした。彼の講義の中で「日本の銀行が過去の失敗の故に今小企業に投資できないでいる。小企業に金が回らないと景気が良くならない。日本の景気が回復しない理由はここにある」という話があったので、「それも重要な理由だが、もう一つ重要な理由がある。金融界は何十年も担保で投資することばかりやってきてBusiness Modelや事業計画に投資することはしなかった。そういう訓練も慣習もないから小企業に投資出来ないのだ」という意見を言ったら「名刺をくれ」と言われた。彼はPartner, Sculley Brothers LLCという名刺を呉れた。兄弟でコンサル会社をやっているという。話しているうちに彼の頭の回転が衰えていないのを知って嬉しかった。
船は中国沿岸沿いに南下して昼には香港近くの海峡に入った。まず目に付いたのは無数の高層アパートが両岸に並んでいることだった。巨大な人口が香港の郊外に広がっている。3pmに船はStar Ferryの九龍側波止場の隣のOcean Terminalに接岸した。そこには我々の船と同程度か少し大きい香港の客船が２つも３つもあったので驚いたが、後で知ったところでは、賭け事が禁止されている香港から公海に出て賭け事をするCasino船とのことだった。一晩で往復する船もあり、上海まで週末に出掛ける船もある。そういえば香港では1997年の返還まではCasinoがあったと記憶する。また賭け事のために香港から澳門に船が出るという記事を読んだ覚えがある。1999年に澳門も返還されて賭け事が禁止されてついに公海になったのかと推察した。それにしても中国人の賭け好きと、賭けができるだけの香港人の財力に感心せざるを得ない。 下船してタクシーでGolden Building Computer Shopping Centerに行き、もう一つModemを買った。何とか部屋でPCをつなぎたいので、改善を期待しての努力である。熱気のある盛んに流行る店が並んでいた。それから地下鉄MTRに乗って香港島の中環に行き、そこから再びタクシーで香港島南端の赤柱StanleyのShopping Centerに行った。花文字を書いて売っている店があった。Sueを要求すると、「蘇」の字を花文字で書いたカードを呉れた。スミヱの友達のJaneのお土産と思って探して貰ったら、中国語でJengとか読むらしい「珍」の花文字を呉れた。「重悳」を要求したら新たに書いてくれた。最後の「心」の点の一つがハート印になった。スミヱが刺繍つきのブラウスを探すのだが、輸出用外人用が主で大きすぎる。それでも何とか見つけてジャッケトとブラウスを買った。 バスで中環に戻り、一人US$5くらいの簡単な夕食をするつもりで探したのだが、生憎庶民的レストランが見当たらない。仕方なくスニーカのままMandarin Hotelに入って中華料理があるかと聞いたら25階と言われた。上ってみると立派な所で我々以外は皆正装だった。メニューを見ると恐ろしく高い。小さなスープが一つUS$16もした。炒飯、炒麺、海老、お茶を頼み、二人でUS$130も掛かった。しかし全て美味で、生涯ベストの中華料理を食べたと思った。 Star Ferryで九龍側に戻り、船の近くの店で、9:30pm閉店寸前に絹のパジャマの安売りを見つけて二人で約3千円と5千円で買ってしまった。スミヱは喜んだが、絹の肌触りは初めての重悳は落ち着かない。 |
| While Sue became ready for the day in the morning, Shig went out of the ship to walk around Kowloon. Shops were not yet open but Shig found a beautiful Kowloon Park with a flamingo pond. Tropical trees had pretty flowers, and huge unique trees named Chinese Banyan were impressive. Many people were practicing Chinese stretch. Apparently, it must enhance health of Chinese people in general and would generate their energy.
At 10:30am, a group of 13 passengers set out for a tour named "Lunch with Dr. Lee". At first, Shig was not interested at all in this tour, but a lecture about tours in Hong Kong changed Shig's mind, because a Chinese celebrity Dr. Lee, with the doctor's degree in psychology in US, was said to be a famous figure in cooking, and Shig thought Sue must be interested. We first stopped at a food market street, where all kinds of food, vegetables, pork, fish, chickens, spices, etc. were carried. Then we were bused to Dr. Lee's flat to be seated to two round tables. Dr. Lee must be in her 70's but looked as if 50's. On our table were, Dr. Lee, Herb & Leah Karp from a suburb of San Diego, retired HP executive Bill & Margaret Gunther also from another suburb of San Diego and Ann. Food was very creative and good. Sue was eager to memorize tastes in her tongue and also bought autographed recipe books. When the bus returned near the ship, we got off and took a walk around the busiest shopping streets, Nathan Road and Canton Road, and Kowloon Park again, before returning to the ship. We had dinner in casual attires. We dined with Ms. Kristy Rivers again, but this time Sue sat between her and her one-year older 23 year old brother Mr. Jason Rivers. They were ball dance instructors. Next to Shig was 91 year old Mrs. Liese Lotte (Lilo) Sanborn. She was born as a German and told us her experience of the terrible inflation after the World War I. She lives in California now. She had no hearing problem, and her words were articulate and logical. We want to be 91 years old like her. Both Sue and Shig took pasta dinner. We enjoyed a show of music and dance after dinner. |
朝重悳は下船して九龍を散歩した。まだ店は開いてなかったが九龍公園というフラミンゴが沢山いる綺麗な公園を見つけた。熱帯性の木が花をつけている。気根が沢山下がってきて幹に成長するらしい大木があちこちにあって、「細葉（木ヘンに容）Chinese Banyan」という札が下がっていたが、沖縄のガジュマルと同じとみた。大勢の人が太極拳をやっており、中国人のバイタリティの源泉を見た気がした。
10:30amのツア"Lunch with Dr. Lee"には13人の旅客が参加した。米国の大学で心理学のDoctorをとった上海生まれの中国人女性「Mrs. Maria Lee, 李曾超群」で、マスコミを通じて香港では知らぬ人がない料理研究家だそうだ。最初重悳は全く興味なかったが、事前の説明を聞いてこれはスミヱが喜ぶなと心変わりした。我々はまず食材の町を訪れた。野菜、豚肉、牛肉、魚貝類、生きた鶏、香辛料など何でもある。なおついでに覗いた近くのJade Marketには、低品質の翡翠を並べて極端に安く売る商人が沢山居た。それから香港島中腹のマンションの一角にあるDr. Leeの家に入った。彼女は70歳を超えているはずだが50歳代に見える。二つのテーブルに分かれたが、我々のテーブルに座ったのは、Dr. Lee、San Diego郊外から来たHerb & Leah Karp（昔は絶世の美女だったと思われる美しいおばあさん）、同じくSan Diego郊外のHP退職者で教育学博士のBill & Margaret Gunther、それとAnnという人だった。料理は創造的で美味しかった。スミヱは味を舌に覚えさせるのに賢明だったが、自署つきの料理本を2冊購入した。 バスが船の近くまで戻ったところで下車し、海辺を散歩し、繁華街Nathan Road, Canton Roadを巡り、スミヱには初めての九龍公園を楽しんだ。 今晩はCasualの日だった。再び社交ダンス教師のMs. Kristy Riversと一緒になったが、今度はスミヱが彼女と彼女の1年年長で23歳の兄Mr. Jason Riversの間に座った。難攻不落に見えたKristyと親しく話したスミヱの外交術が光った。重悳と並んで座ったLiloさんはドイツ人として生まれた米人の91歳で、第一次大戦後のドイツのスーパーインフレの話をしてくれた。耳も遠くなく、話は論理的ではっきりしていた。ああいう91歳になりたいものだ。スミヱも重悳もパスタディナをとった。 食事のあとは音楽とダンスのショーを楽しんだ。 |
