After 45 minutes bus drive, we arrived at a town of Havelock, where we got on a boat to cruise in the Marlborough Sounds. The bus driver was now a boat driver. We looked around villas and lodges on the seashores and then mussel farms. We were served with steamed green mussels and lunch. They were very good.

We drove back to the middle point, where we visited a winery.

We dined with an Oklahoma couple of lawyers. The evening show of a organist / pianist was super.

We saw Southern Cross again, this time from our window.

バスで45分農村をドライブしてHavelockの港町に着き、ボートに乗り換えた。バスの運転手がボートの運転手に早変わりした。ボートは岸辺の別荘や開発中の別荘地などを見ながら進み、500もあるというMussel Farmの幾つかに乗り入れて見学させた。或る入江で特産のGreen Mussselを蒸したものを出してくれたが非常に美味であった。次いでLunchが出た。いつの間にか運転手がChefになっていた。帰路にWineryに立ち寄った。

Casualの夕食ではOklahomaの弁護士夫妻と一緒だった。保守的なOklahomaで我々は進歩的なのだと。

夜のショーの、オルガン／ピアノ奏者はすばらしかった。カラオケを演奏しながらビアノを弾くのは、先回もそうだったがこの人が初めてだ。

今夜も南十字星が見えた。今夜はCabinの窓からも見えた。

We set out for another leisurely bus tour. The bus first introduced us to the Parliament. It was a cone-shaped building, which never looked like the parliament. Then we drove into the east shoreline of Wellington Harbour via a privately owned gated road. On our way we stopped for taking pictures of lighthouses and the rocks.

We finally arrived at Pencarrow Lodge surrounded by sheep farm to spend about an hour to take brunch, to watch demonstration of dogs controlling sheep etc.

We returned to Wellington a little earlier than schedule and we got off at the National Museum named "Te Papa", or "Our Place". It says it is "the museum of New Zealand". Maori cultures and settlers' cultures were displayed rather intermixed to symbolize the country's policy of integrating Maori as a part of New Zealand society.

We walked along the street for window shopping, until we reached the shuttle bus stop, by which we returned.

We requested a company table, but no body appeared after us and we took dinner by ourselves.

今日もゆったり時間を過ごすBus Tourだった。まずBusは市内を巡り議事堂で停車して写真を撮らせてくれた。Cone型の建物でとても議事堂には見えなかった。それからWellington湾を構成する東海岸の海岸沿いに、ゲートのある私道経由でドライブした。時々灯台や岩の海岸の撮影のために停車した。

Busは丘に登り、Pencarrow Lodgeという羊牧場に囲まれた建物に案内された。ここで約１時間を過ごし、Brunchと羊をコントロールする犬のデモを見たりした。

少し早めにWellingtonに戻り、私達は途中でBusを放棄して国立博物館"Te Papa"="Our Place"に入った。The Museum of New Zealandと称している。Maoriの文化や開拓者の文化などが比較的入れ混じった形で展示されており、Maoriを取り込もうとしている国策に沿っていると感じた。

博物館のMaori文化の展示の中で、Green Stoneと称する黒緑の翡翠の1種に印象付けられたSueは、Museum Shopでその石で出来たペンダントを買った。

Window Shoppingで街を歩き、Shuttle Busで戻った。

夕食は誰かと同席する"Company"を頼んだのだが、時間の関係で誰も現れず2人だけの夕食となった。

First, we visited a chocolate factory, allegedly famous in New Zealand. Then we went to an orchard farm, to look around various fruits being riped.

Finally the bus took us to the summit of a hill named "Te Mata Peak" to command a good view of Napier afar. Then we drove back through a farmland valley.

It was not a very exciting day today.

この国では有名だと言うChocolate工場を訪れ、製作現場を見学し、歴史博物館を見た。それから、果樹園農家を訪れ、様々な果実を見学した。

最後にバスはTe Mata Peakという平野に削り残されたような丘に登った。遥かにNapierが見えて、見晴らしの良い所だった。農業の盛んな谷を経由して戻った。

あまりExcitingではないのんびりした一日だった。

Our bus tour went to Rotorua. First, the bus took us to the only Maori-owned geothermal valley of "Hell's Gate". We saw hot spring pools, hot water falls, steam holes etc.

Then the bus took us to a lake called Tarawera, where Tara means Peak and Wera means Burn. We got on a boat, which took us to the other side of the lake. There was steam rising from the water surface and hot water was flowing into the lake.

From there we got on a helicopter to fly up to the peak of Mt. Tarawera. There we saw a series of craters which errupted 120 years ago.

After returning to the lake, we walked to the hot water shoreline. I changed to swimming pants in order to bathe in the hot spring. Then I found that the water was either too hot or too cool for bathing.

After return to the ship, I took time to walk around the town of Tauranga. Red flowers of Pohutakawa were beautiful everywhere. The outside beach, which claims to be the most beautiful beach in New Zealand, was super with white sand, rock formations and small islands.

We dined with the couple of Herman/Detty from Belgium, who would leave the ship tomorrow.

我々のバスツアは専らRotoruaの郊外を巡った。まずこの国で唯一Maori族が所有するという地熱地帯Hell's Gateを訪れた。日本でも地獄谷という。温泉の池、蒸気孔、温泉の滝などを見学した。

それからTarawera湖に行って船に乗った。Tara=Peak、Wera=Burnだそうだ。船で対岸に着くと、温泉が岸辺から湧いて湖に流れこみ、湖面から蒸気が立ち上っていた。

ここからHelicopterでTarawera山に登った。伊豆大島で見たのと同じような一直線に並んだ噴火口群があった。遠くに大室山に似た山容の山があった。

湖に戻ってから、先ほどの温泉のある湖面に行き、温泉に入るつもりで海水パンツになったが、水が一部は極度に熱く、他は極度に冷たく、入れなかった。

船に戻ってから、Sueは休憩し、私独りでTaurangaの町を散歩した。観光の町だ。折りしもネムに似たPohutakawaの真っ赤な花があちこちに咲いて綺麗だった。湾の外側がMaoriの所有地になっていて、New Zealand一番の美しい浜辺だと紹介されて行ってみると、さすがに美しかった。幅広い白浜に岩と小島があり、遠くに聖地Mt. Maunganuiが見えた。

夕食は明日下船するHerman/Detty夫妻と共にした。Belgiumに遊びにおいでと誘われた。

We took a boat tour to Rangitoto Island off the coast of Auckland, which was a natural park full of Pohutakawa trees, but only a part of them were in bloom. It was said to be an dormant volcano, which most recently errupted in 1400 AD.

The island was characterized by very black lava rocks and Pohutakawa trees, and some wild flowers. We walked through a path appreciating flowers. Then it began to rain, and heavier and heavier. We made haste into the boat, but we were drenched.

While Sue rested for recovery from chill, I did laundry.

After laundry, we set out for the town. We spent most of time in a New Zealand brand sweater shop "Bonz". Asking there where to eat, we went to a Japanese Sushi restaurant "Donkey". Soy sauce Ramen and Sushi were very good. Then we climbed Sky Tower.

島は真っ黒な熔岩で覆われていた。伊豆半島と同様な熔岩の割れ方が見られた。その上にPohutakawaを初めうっそうと木々が育っている。但しPossamが繁殖して木の葉を食べてしまい、枯木の島になりそうだったので、数年前にPossamを大量に毒殺してから緑が復元したという。

公園道をあるいているうちに雨が降り出し、ドシャ降りとなったので、急いでボートに戻ったら、小学生上級生かと思われる生徒が引率されてキャンプに到着したのとすれ違った。我々はビショ濡れとなった。

Sueが濡れた寒さから回復するまでの間、私は洗濯機を回した。

洗濯が終わったので、2人で街に出て、New Zealand Brandのセータの店Bonzに行った。今回Christchurch店のHarukoさんには会えなかったが、Auckland店の多鶴Taduさんと知り合った。彼女に聞いた寿司店"Donkey"で久しぶりに醤油の味を楽しんだ。それからSky Towerに上った。
