In the afternoon, there was an auction of things for raising money for crew welfare. We watched a part of it without intention of bidding but just for fun.

We dined at Latitudes by ourselves. The menu was changed from what we had last time, but remained to feature "Indochine". Last time I was not, but this time 100% healthy, and I enjoyed food very much.

We donated the Japanese books we brought for reading, in order to enrich Japanese library of the ship. I attached abstract of the books so that someone could assess the books.

The evening show was by Paul Williams, a Hollywood singer songwriter, whom everyone except ourselves seem to know. He sang songs of his composing, which everyone except us knew very well and loved.

午後Crewの福祉の資金集めのためにAuctionが行われ、Bidする気は無かったが面白半分に一部を見た。Earnestのサイン入り写真や、Marinerが先頃まで掲げていた仏三色旗や、船長引継式のサイン入り写真などが競られた。

夕食は再びLatitudesで二人だけでとった。先回からメニューは変わったが、Indochineがテーマであることは変わらずだ。先回は風邪薬の影響でおいしく頂けなかったが、今回は充分楽しめた。

読書のために持ち込んだ日本語の文庫本6冊を、船の図書室に寄付してきた。1冊ずつに梗概を印刷して添付し、誰かが評価できるようにした。万葉集や古典の紹介など高度なものが多かったので「私のようにIntelligentな人向きの本だ」と冗談を飛ばしたら受けた。

夜のショーは、Paul Williamsという有名らしいHollywoodのSinger Songwriterが歌った。日本で言えば「さだまさし」か。

There was the last lecture by Laura Brands, a lovely scholar in Jean-Michael's marine preservation organization, about "California Kelp Forest". As anticipated, it was not on the kelp but on creatures living in the kelp forest near Los Angeles. She was lovely in nature, which was often expressed in her gestures during the lecture.

From 11am, only the frequent travellers on Regent were invited to cocktails and piano party in the Observation Lounge, which we enjoyed.

In the lunch time, the international food market was held. Food representing many Asian countries was displayed and Sue took many pictures. We took Sushi, Sashimi and soy sauce among others.

In the afternoon, three larger rooms were open for showing, and I, a man of curiosity, went there to see. We are in a regular cabin of 301 ft2. The fares are different even within the regular cabins depending on the decks. A cabin on a higher deck costs more for a better view, but sways more. If we take the fare of our cabin as 100%, fares differ from 85% to 105%. There are penthouse suites, but not on the top decks, of 449 ft2. They cost from 121% to 143%. We saw a Seven Seas Suite of 847 ft2, of which the suite itself is 561 ft2, costing 181%. There are two toilets and spacious balcony overlooking wake of the ship. The biggest cabin we saw was Mariner Suite of 739 ft2, of which the suite is 650 ft2, costing 227%. There are two toilets and a proportionate balcony.

The British ship of QE-II is said to have 4 classes. Each class has its own restaurant. But otherwise, everything is said to be equal. The seat of the restaurant table, and therefore, the time to eat and the members to eat together, are also fixed. The good thing about this ship Mariner is that there is no class, and that one can go to restaurants anytime and with whomever.

The evening dress code was formal, and Sue wore Tomesode again, and attracted attention from everybody.

In the Farewell Party held at 6:15pm, it was announced that a couple had donated $10k to the crew welfare fund. They must be a couple really rich in money and in hearts. It was followed by show performances by selected members of the crew, and farewell show-up for greeting by all sections of the crew including our stewardess Jany. It was the third of the same performances during our cruises, but it was good.

Due to the rough sea, singing and dancing scheduled for the evening show was cancelled.

Jean-Michael Coustauxの海洋環境研究所の研究員Laura Brands女史による最終講義があった。California Kelp Forestという表題だったが、予想通りコンブの話ではなく、コンブの森に住む生物の話だった。彼女は性格的に愛らしいのだと思うが、講義の最中に出る手振り身振りなどにそれが表れて人気になっている。

11amからは、Regentに沢山乗船したPlatinum & Gold MembersだけがCocktailsとPianoのPartyに招かれた。同じ人の演奏を夜のホールで聞いた時には感心しなかったのだが、こういったPartyで聞くには良い芸術家なのかも知れない。

昼食時に国際料理市が開かれ、各国の特色ある料理が並んだ。私達は寿司と刺身と醤油を中心に構成したが、少し食べ過ぎた。

午後は3種類の大きな部屋が（普通船室の）船客に公開された。好奇心から勿論行ってみた。大きな部屋は、部屋の面積比例よりは料金は割安だ。部屋以外の食事や観劇のコストに特権はないから当然だ。また階数が高いほど料金は高く設定されている。陸地が近付いた時には見晴らしがよいからだが、実は船が揺れ始めると高い階ほど当然ながらよく揺れる。だからベテランは金持でも低い階の船室を選ぶ。船体の室数352室のうち普通船室が262室74%を占め、その1.5倍程度のPenthouse船室が60室17%だ。それ以上の特別室は30室9%に過ぎない。Penthouseというのはビルの屋上や最上階に作った特別室をいうものだが、ここでは特に上階にある訳でもなく、単に船室の仕様を言っている。

普通船室でも部屋が252 ft2 = 22.7�u = 6.9坪もあって、それに海に面したBalconyが付いているから充分ではないか、船室を出れば全て平等だし、もし金があったらそれだけ航海日数を増やした方が楽しいと、狭い家に住み慣れた小柄な日本人は貧乏人根性で考えてしまう。広い家に住み慣れた外人が、1.5倍の広さで1.2倍の料金ならとPenthouseを選ぶのは分かる気がするが、それ以上を選ぶ人はCruiseの料金など気にしないレベルの人なのであろう。

今晩のDress CodeはFormalだったので、Sueは留袖を再び着て、再び注目を集めた。

6:15pmからFarewell Partyがあった。席上発表があり、或るご夫婦がCrewの福祉のための資金に$10k寄付したとのこと。金銭的にも心も豊かなご夫婦に違いない。我々も$20寄付した。総計$20k近く集まったような話だった。それからCrewの歌と踊りの演技があった。Philippinesの美人WaitressのVictoriaがずっと出演していたことに、初めて気づいた。最後にCrewの各持場の代表または全員が舞台に現れて挨拶した。3回同じものを見たが飽きない。

海が荒れているため、Singing and Dancingの公演は中止となった。

Since the morning, we were eager to do packing.

When we were resting near the library, the Aaron / Ronie couple passed by. Aaron used to be an executive in NY Exchange. They came to us and wished our happy return home. Then he added he would like to write a memo "You are very lucky and happy having this wife" so that I would put it on a mirror and see it every morning. I know, I know, Aaron-san. I know it without a memo.

Social Director "Muriel" was working in the library to put DVD's in order. I approached her and asked the name of another lady who work often with her. She said she was Dionne Lochner, Assistant Cruise Director and showed me an expression to say why I could be onboard without knowing her name. I thought so in the beginning. But later I thought, "Wait a minute, there are two similar-looking ladies. One is feminine soft Dionne. The other is a masculine strong lady. Don't confuse." It was interesting that those images came from the same lady.

Towards the evening, the swell subsided and it was announced that the singing and dancing show would be held before the dinner. The show was performed by 7 new members and 2 continuing members. I was surprised. Although the cast was quite different now, singing, dancing, costumes, stories were quite the same as what we saw in the past with the older cast. I was impressed that the same show could be readily performed by a different cast. It is direction which makes a performance.

朝から荷造りに精を出した。

部屋の掃除が終わる間、図書室の近くで休んでいたら、元New York証券取引所幹部のAaron / Ronie夫妻が通りかかり、帰路の安全を願う言葉を掛けてくれた。続いてAaron氏が言うには、「君はこんな奥さんを持って幸せ者だ」と書いたメモを贈りたい。家の鏡に貼って毎朝それを見るようにと。分かっているよAaronさん。そんなメモが無くても毎日そう思っているから。

Social DirectorのMuriel が図書室でDVDの整理をしていたので近付いて、彼女とよく仕事をしている女性の名前を尋ねた。Assistant Cruise DirectorのDionneですよ、と言って、あの有名人の名を知らないでよく1ヵ月半も船に乗っていられたわね、と言わんばかりの顔をした。実は私もあれはDionneだと最近まで思っていた。南アフリカ出身の白人で舞台のDancerから身を立てて出世した女性だ。しかし最近こう思っていた。待てよ、よく似た女性が二人いるぞ。一人はDionneで女らしく優しい。一人は男性的で強い。よく似ているが間違えないように注意しなければと。

夕方になるとウネリも収まり、昨日キャンセルされたSinging and Dancing Showが夕食前に行われる事が放送された。行ってみると、旧メンバが2名引き続きやっているものの、7名は新しい顔ぶれだったにも拘らず、旧メンバで以前見た公演とまったく同じ公演だった。歌、ダンス、衣装、ストーリーなどそっくりだった。如何に演出が大事かを見せ付けられた気がした。一つ改善されたと思った。旧メンバの歌手は一人一人はうまいのだが、コーラスになると感心しなかったが、新メンバのコーラスは満足できた。

At arriving the International Terminal in LAX, I learned that the baggage storage was closed for security reason. So we had to load the three heavy suit cases in the courtesy shuttle bus to Holiday Inn. We found this Holiday Inn rather desolate. I may have to change my brand image of Holiday Inn, as modernized new hotels as it was when I was a student in Illinois. Probably I'll switch to Sheraton or other hotels.

We took lunch at a near-by MacDonald, which was also desolate. Then we consulted with the hotel clerk what we could do today and tomorrow. He immediately advised us to take bus tours; a half-day Los Angeles City Tour today, and a full-day San Diego Sea World Tour tomorrow, and we took them.

The bus took us to Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and showed us Los Angeles night skylines.

We asked the hotel if there was a Chinese restaurant near-by, and walked four blocks to one. Food was delicious and we were glad that we asked.

LAXのInternational Terminalで重い荷物を預けてしまい、身軽でHotelに行こうと思っていたのだが、案内係に聞くと荷物預かり所は"No More"で無いという。仕方ないからHotelのCourtesy Busに重い荷物を持ち込んで、Holiday Inn LAXに入った。何だかパッとしないHotelだ。私が米学生の頃、Holiday Innは近代的な新しい憧れのHotelチェーンだった。その良いイメ−ジを引きずってきたが、どうも最近裏切られることが増えてきた。

Hotelの近くのMacDonaldで昼食をとったが、これまたパッとしないMacだった。今日半日とあす1日をどう過ごしたらよいかHotelの係に相談したら、飛んで火に入る夏の虫だったらしく、早速今日はLos Angeles市内観光半日コ−ス、明日はSan Diegoまで片道2.5時間走るSea World観光コ−スを勧められ、それに乗ることにした。

バスはSanta Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywoodを巡り、Los Angelesの夜景を見せてくれた。

夕食はHotelに聞いて４ブロック歩き、中華料理店に入った。味は大変良かった。夜歩くのは危険かと心配したが、下町はいざ知らず、空港の近くは大丈夫そうだった。

We reported the Hotel personnel about cancel and asked what other tours were available today. He recommended Universal Studio Tour and Sue was interested in it. It included pick-up and dilivery coach service to and from Universal Studio and the admission to it. Coach service was poor and unkind, and we experienced a return back from half-way to switch to another driver and coach for changes of assignment to the drivers. A very strange occurrence. The new driver was a good-natured one, but I expressed my dissatisfaction to him, stating however that it was not his fault.

In Universal Studio, we experienced movie making studio tour also including experiences of flood, earthquake, King Kong etc., Back to the Future ride which was a shaking vehicle in front of a movie, Jurassic Park ride which was a splashing boat tour among dinosaur models, Terminator 2 show which was a 3D movie, animal actors, Water World which was a splashing stage drama on the water, among other things.

We were taken to the hotel and went out for dinner at the same Chinese restaurant which we found good yesterday. I was irritated that I could not go out quickly, and then that the restaurant clerk, who was probably the wife of the restaurant owner, was doing long chat with intimate customers and did not turn to us for order taking and for payment.

Hotelの係にキャンセルを伝え、これから出発できるTourはないかと尋ねたらUniversal Studioを勧められた。Universal Studio入場券と、往復のバスサービスを含む内容だった。映画が嫌いで日本のUniversal Studioも行ったことがないから、時間を潰すには丁度良いかと思った。ところが往復のバスサービスが良くなかった。往きのバスは我々2人だけだったので馬鹿にされたのかも知れないが、半分ほど行ったところで会社からの電話で運転手の交代が命じられ、引き返して途中でバスと運転手の変更となった。交代した運転手は良い運転手で親切だったが、私はあなたの責任ではないとは言いながらさんざん会社への嫌味を言った。

Universal Studioは入場さえすればあとは全てタダという方式だった。映画を撮っているStudioの見学Tourには洪水、地震、キングコングの体験などが含まれていた。Back to the Future Rideとは前後左右に激しく揺れる乗物と映画の組合せだった。Jurassic Park Rideとは、恐竜モデルの間をボートで行き、あちこちでシブキを浴びる仕掛けだった。Terminator 2は３D映画だった。Animal Actorsでは様々な動物が演技をした。Water Worldは、シブキが掛かる水を舞台とした活劇だった。そんな出し物を見た。

Hotelに送ってもらい、すぐ出掛けて夕食と思ったのだが、すぐ出られず私はイラついた。昨夜の中国レストランが良かったので再訪したが、主人の奥さんと思われる客席係が馴染みの客と長談義をしていて、注文をとりに来ないし勘定の頼みようもなかったので、またイラついた。Sueには気を遣わせて悪いことをした。

The flight was smooth, food was good, our Akita-beauty attendant was superb.

飛行はスムースだった。食事も最高で、秋田美人のStewardessも最高だった。
