We spent most of the time for reading today. It was a "Formal" evening, and in addition, there was a party of repeaters, Seven Seas Society, before the dinner. Sue wore a whitish kimono with hand-drawn irises tied with black obi belt. We took tactics in the party of not sitting down but walking around to talk with many. It worked well but we ended up with talking with Teel family for long. In this context, we dined with Woody, Karen & Adely Teel, Tom & Susan and Dick & Ann Castello. Dick & Ann bought a house of a famous actor in Beverly Hills, which was visited by 20 sightseeing buses every day. Shig and Sue sat near and talked much with Susan, and found her a very attractive lady, open-hearted, friendly, sociable and thoughtful. Shig talked much with Dick, too. Sue took a pasta dinner and Shig ate sole. The after-dinner show was by an Oriental performer, i.e. singer, instrument-performer and juggler.

　今日は読書に多くの時間を費やした。今晩はFormalで、しかも夕食前にリピータのクラブSeven Seas Societyのパーティーがあった。スミヱは手書きのあやめ模様の白っぽい着物に黒い帯をしめた。パーティーの作戦として、なるべく座らずに歩き回って多くの人と話す作戦とした。これは大変うまくいった。しかし主催者の話が始まったので最後にはTeel一家の所に座り込み話すことになった。その流れで夕食はWoody, Karen & Adely Teelと一緒で、Tom & Susan、Dick & Ann Castelloと同席した。Dick & AnnはBeverly Hillsの有名俳優の家を買って住んでいるそうで、毎日観光バスが20台くらい見に来るそうだ。重悳も昔そういうバスに乗った経験があるが、誰が誰か分からず面白くなかった。重悳とスミヱはSusanの近くに座り色々話した。大変魅力的な人であることが分かった。気さくで親しみやすく、社交的で思いやりがある。スミヱはパスタを重悳は舌平目をとった。食後のショーは、東洋人の多才な芸能人で、歌、演奏、Jugglingを取り混ぜた。

    We first visited Napoleon's tomb. He was buried there from his death in 1821 to re-burial in France in 1840. We don't much like the tomb in general, but this tomb was surrounded by various beautiful flowers. Ten minutes walk one way was rewarded. Then we were taken to Longwood House, where Napoleon was confined since his exile in 1815 till his death in 1821. The compound was big and filled with huge trees and pretty flowers. The large mansion was beautifully furnished. We would like happily to be exiled in such a house but apparently Napoleon was very unhappy about his fate. We then visited the Governor's house called Plantation House, and its lawn garden was the home for famous tortoises. The biggest and oldest of them was named Jonathan. He was said to have been taken here in 1822, and had lived for 180 years since then. We stood over the Ladder Hill Fort built by Britain in the mid-19th century, 200m above the sea. The van took us to Jamestown at the bottom of the valley and we dismissed there.

    Shig wanted to climb up and down by Jacob's Ladder, 200m high with 700 steps, between the town and Ladder Hill, but Sue wanted to stay in the town. Shig climbed slowly and steadily without recess. It took 18 minutes up and 12 minutes down. Shig met Sue in the town and returned to the ship by the tender.

    The ship raised the anchors at 2pm and sailed along the north cliffs of the island for some time. We could see from the deck a dozen of dolphins surprised by the ship, and flying fish, too. It was a "Casual" evening, and we dined with Fred & Pat again, and staffs Jason and Tania again. Sue took Halibut fillet and Shig ordered a special cooking of "plain pasta cooked without anything" and ate it with sald oil. The after-dinner show was by the Polish-Scotish violinist, Dominique Ava. She was good.

　最初にNapoleonの墓に行った。Napoleonはここに1821年の死から1840年に仏に改葬されるまで埋葬されていた。一般にお墓はあまり好きではないが、この墓は色々な美しい花に囲まれていた。片道10分歩いた甲斐があった。それからLongwood Houseに行った。Napoleonが1815年に流刑になってから1821年に亡くなるまで幽閉されていた家だ。大きな敷地には巨木と多くの花壇があり、広い邸宅には美しい家具が設えられていた。Napoleonは護衛つきの外出を嫌い家にこもっていたそうだ。我々なら喜んでこういう所に幽閉されてみたいと思うのだが、明らかにNapoleonは彼の運命に非常に不満だったようだ。それから我々はPlantaion Houseという名の知事邸を訪れた。その芝生の庭には有名な亀の一家がいる。一番大きくて年取った亀はJonathanという名がついている。1822年にここに連れて来られたというからもう180年も生きていることになる。本当かいな。海から200mも上にあるLadder Hill要塞の上に立ってみた。英国が19世紀半ばに構築した要塞だ。それから谷の底にあるJamestownに降りて、解散となった。

重悳はJacob's Ladderを上り下りしたいと考えた。町とLadder Hillとを結ぶ標高差200m、700段の石段だ。スミヱは町で待っていると言った。重悳はゆっくり着実に休みなく歩いて、上りに18分、下りに12分を要した。膝に負担が掛かる下りの方が大変だった。重悳は町で子供たちのコーラスを聞いていたスミヱを見つけ一緒に艀に乗って船に戻った。

　船は2pmに錨を上げ、しばらくは島の北側の岩壁に沿って進んだ。デッキから十数頭のイルカが船に驚いて逃げ出すのが見え、次に飛び魚も見えた。Casualの夕べで、我々はFred & Pat、クルーのJason、Taniaと一緒に夕食をとった。スミヱはオオヒラメの切り身を取り、重悳は「何も味をつけないパスタ」を頼んでサラダオイルで食べた。夕食後のショーはポーランド生まれでスコットランドから来たバイオリニストDominique Avaの演奏を聴いた。素晴らしかった。

    According to "St. Helena Herald" distributed yesteday, many ships have called St. Helena recently. An American ship Seabourn Sun with 485 passengers on April 5, a British ship Saga Rose on April 7, another British ship Queen Elizabeth II on April 8, a European ship HAL Amsterdam on April 10 and our American ship on April 15. The passengers of Saga Rose reportedly could not land at Walvis Bay because of a strike there. We were lucky to get there one week later. We thought there were so many ships calling throught the year, but it was not the case. After our ship, the next ship to call will be QE II coming back in December.

    Towards late afternoon, we had more swell. Sue attended a fashion show of costumes and accessories from the boutique shop modeled by performers. Sue found conversation in the audience quite the same as that in Japan "It looks beautiful on that slim model, but not on us", but Sue found ladies in the audience much bigger than those in Japan.

    It was a "Informal" evening. We dined with Jim & Bonnie Hookman, the only participants from Arkansas. Both of us ate pasta dinner.

　昨日差し入れられた現地新聞"St. Helena Herald"によれば、沢山の船が最近St. Helenaを訪れたらしい。乗客485名を載せた米船Seabourn Sun号が4月5日に、英船Saga Rose号が4月7日に、英船Queen Elizabeth II号が4月8日に、欧船HAL Amsterdam号が4月10日に、我が米船が4月15日に寄港した。伝えられるところではSaga Roseの乗客はWalvis Bayにストで上陸できなかったそうだ。我々は運がいい。翌週Walvis Bayに立ち寄ったのだから。我々より1週間前にCape Townに着いたQE IIの乗客は、悪天候のためTable Mountainに登れなかったとも聞く。この調子でSt. Helenaには年中寄港船があるのかと思ったらそうでもなくて、我々の次はQE IIが12月に戻って来るまで寄港船は無いそうだ。

　午後遅くなってややうねりがやってきた。スミヱはファションショーを見てきた。売店の服やアクセサリーを正札のままダンサなどの出演者がモデルになって着た。客席での会話は全く日本と同じで「あのスリムなモデルだから似合うけど私たちは駄目よねえ」だったが、日本と違う点は客席の女性が日本よりずっと太っていることだった。

　Informalの夕べだった。16年前にChicagoの鉄道員を引退してArkansasに住み再婚したというJim & Bonnieと一緒に食事した。18歳の米兵として別府に進駐した彼、9年前の新婚旅行で日本に来た2人と日本の話が弾んだ。重悳もスミヱもパスタディナを食べた。
