It was a formal attire evening. Sue wore a green Kimono to attend the welcome party held by the captain before dinner. Sue's Kimono was appreciated by many people.

We were seated in the dinner with two couples; One of a former New York exchange executive and of an investor.

Sueは緑の和服で装いを整えた。夕食前に船長主催の歓迎カクテルパーティがあり、入口で船長と並んで写真を撮った。Sueの和服はとにかくモテる。

夕食では2組のカプルとご一緒した。一方はNew York証券取引所の元幹部で、今はFloridaの最高級保養地Palm Beachに隠居しているが、年に3-4ヶ月しかそこには居なくて、あとは世界を旅行していると。もう1組は、医者から投資家に転向したカプルで、Finland出身の奥さんが活動的だった。

We, together with a couple of lawyers, both from University of Illinois, were in a van to drive for 2 hours to get to the town of Ballarat, where gold was discovered in 1851. The site called "Sovereign Hill" was well organized re-constructed gold mine town, still digging and expracting gold, but for sightseeing purposes. We strolled along the 19th century street, and participated in the 45 minute gold mine tour. Then I did some panning. The first pan didn't yield anything, but from the more accustomed second pan, I got 5 small flakes. We took lunch in the town.

Then we were led to a Wildlife Park, where wild animals were walking on the paths together with visitors. Sue touched Koala and fed Kangaloos from her hand.

The van came back to Melbourne to show us around before returning to the pier. We opted to get off at the downtown to walk aroud. Swanston Street seemed to be the prosperous shopping street. We took a cab to the pier.

We were together with 2 couples from US in the dinner. A couple of a former HP executive, used to live in Los Gatos and live in Carmel. The other couple was from St. Barbara. American English was much easier for us to understand and to communicate.

8:30am出発のバスで観光に出るはずだったが、乗客が4人だけだとかで、Vanに乗った。一緒の2人はIllinois大出身で同大に名のついたPlazaを寄付したこともある弁護士夫妻だった。

2時間もドライブしてBallaratという町に着き、かっての金鉱山がNPOによって運営されている Sovereign Hill という1850年代を復元した町に入った。ここでは今でも金の採掘が行われており、しかしそれだけでは儲からないので、観光で稼いでいる。金だけではなく、パン屋、レストラン、靴屋、宝石屋から車輪屋まであって、それぞれ本当に商売をしている。金鉱ツアに参加した。Australian英語はほとんど理解出来なかったが、何しろ鉱山の中に導かれ、採掘現場を見せられた。私はPanningをやった。最初のPanからは収穫がなかったが、慣れてきた2度目のPanからは5個の微小な金の小片を得た。この町で昼食をとった。

次にWildlife Parkに行った。KangarooやEmuが観光客と同じ道の上を歩いている面白い所だ。SueはKoalaを撫ぜさせてもらった。

VanはMelbourneの観光をしてくれたが、船に戻る前に中心街で降ろしてもらい、ブラブラと散歩した。なかなか消費活動が盛んな町だった。

夕食は2組の米夫妻と一緒になった。米英語になるとよく通じるから不思議だ。1組は元HP経理で、Los Gatosに住んでいたがCarmelに移転したと。

We spent time mostly in writing and reading.

In the informal dinner time,

午後遅くTasmaniaの東北の岬の灯台を遥かに見て南下した。一日中身辺整理や読み物・書き物に時間を費やした。

夕食はInformalだった。

We took a bus tour. The bus first drove around Hobart City and then drove north to Bonorong Wildlife Park. There were many kangaroos hopping around and fed from visitors' hands. Many had baby kangaroos in their pouches. Also many koalas. The best feature of this park was Tasmanian devil. This dog-like animal is called "devil" because it crushes bones of large animals. It is unique to Tasmania but rarely seen except in this park because it is nocturnal.

Then we drove into Tasmanian Peninsula, where Tasman National Park is located. Near the southern tip of the Peninsula, in the town of Port of Arthur, we took delicious lunch. Then we were led to Port of Arthur Penal Station, ruins of British penal station located here from 1830 to 1877. We walked around the ruined buildings.

Before returning to the pier, the bus showed us Hobart shopping mall and beautiful private houses. Instead of returning directly to the ship, we spent some time for finding a key tag of Hobart. Sue wanted to rest in the cabin while I walked for one more hour in the City.

Sue wanted to dine rather casually in La Veranda casual restaurant on Deck 11, and she liked it.

早速バス旅行に出掛けた。Hobartの街を多少巡ってから小一時間ドライブしてBonorong Wildlife Parkに着いた。今まで見たのと大体同じだが、一番の違いはTasmanian DevilというTasmania特有の動物が居ることだ。犬に似ているが頭と口が比較的大きく、犬の骨も噛み砕いて食べてしまうという獰猛な動物で、夜行性のため、観光客用に昼行性に変えた動物園でしか姿を見られない。カンガルーの雌は全て袋に子を抱えていた。

また小一時間ドライブしてTasmania半島に出て昼食した。その近くのPort Arthur刑務所跡を見学し、Australia発祥の流刑の歴史の一端に触れ思いを馳せた。

埠頭に戻ってから船には帰らず、Hobartの名が入ったキータグを買おうとしたが、見つけるのに意外と時間が掛かった。船に戻り、HobartがAustralia最後の寄港地なので乗ってきた税関職員に免税の手続きをした。Sueは休みたいというので、独りでまた1時間余り市内を散歩した。埠頭の近くの丘には高級住宅地があり、平地には州議会や州知事公邸などがあり、またあまり広くはない公園があちこちにあった。オランダの国旗が掲げられていたので行ってみると、オランダ東印度会社のAbel Tasmanがこの地を測量して欧州に報告したことの記念碑であった。Tasmaniaの名のいわれでもある。

市民VolunteerによるBagpipeに送られて船は出港した。出航時の周辺の景色を見たかったので、いつもとは異なりDeck 11の展望レストランで夕食をとり、時々席を外して写真を撮った。

I received a strange phone call in the afternoon. I could not understand what he said in strong Indian accent, but he seemed to invite us two for dinner this evening. Fine, anyone must be interesting.

At the entrance of a restaurant, we waited for an Indian gentleman to pick us up. But one of the waiters approached us and said he called me. He took us to a big table, prepared for a dinner invited by Hotel Director of the ship. Again, Sue's seat was next to the Director. The Hotel Director and the Cruise Director invited us 4 couples.

The Hotel Director was found to be from Austria, and I tried some German to communicate with him. We had an enjoyable dinner.

The ship swayed so badly that the evening show of singing and dancing was cancelled.

今晩はFormalの日だ。Sueは白っぽい着物を着た。

午後にインド訛の強い電話が掛かってきた。何を言っているのか判らなかったが、食事に誘ってくれているようなので、とりあえず落ち合う時間と場所を確定した。

時間に約束の場所に行ってインド人の乗客が現れるのを待っていた。そのうちにWaiterの１人がインド訛で「私が電話した。こちらの席にどうぞ」と言った。Hotel Director Mr. Wartenberg とCruise Director Nancyのご招待だと判った。我々を入れて４組８名が招待されたので、10名の丸テーブルとなり、少々話がしにくかった。Sueは再びDirectorの隣に席が設けられていた。私の隣はAustriaとSwiss出身のご夫妻で、今は米国Berkleyで足の治療専門医をしている。場所柄3名のNobel賞受賞者が自分の顧客だと威張っていた。DirectorはAustria出身だというので一寸独語を試して見た。楽しい夕食だった。
